QUALIFICATIONS
NECESSARY:
· Graduate
of a recognized physiotherapy assistant program at the post-secondary level (or
graduate of a comparable post-secondary health care program);
· Previous
experience working directly with clients in a health care facility;
· Knowledge
in the field of gerontology;
· Excellent
verbal and written communication skills;
· Competent
in using Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
·
Demonstrated ability to work within a team environment;
· Ability
to work under close supervision and to follow verbal and written instruction;
· Current
CPR certification;
·
Physically capable of performing the essential duties of the job.
BASIC
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The
Physiotherapy Assistant is responsible for the provision of treatment programs
that have been developed and are supervised by a qualified physiotherapist, as
directed by professional practice guidelines.
The
Physiotherapy Assistant will provide clerical and administrative support to the
rehabilitation department.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
The
Physiotherapy Assistant, as directed by the physiotherapist(s)
1 . Implements the components of the treatment
plan as directed by the physiotherapist, including: mobility, transfers,
cognitive/perceptual/remedial activities, communication skills, recreational
activities, modalities and exercise programs
2. Participates in the provision of ongoing
education of clients, family members and other hospital staff.
3. Attends, whenever practical, family
conferences, reports and multidiscipline meetings to maintain communication and
consistency of care
4.. Reports observations of patient/client's
performance and response to services
to the physiotherapist. Report changes in health status to the
physiotherapist and/or Nursing.
5. Communicates with members of the
rehabilitation team regarding treatment
programs and client progress. Documentation will include charting and
flow
sheets.
6. Recognizes risk factors, contraindication and precautions related to
patient
exercise and rehabilitation programs.
7. Measures patients’ range-of-joint motion, body parts, and vital signs
to determine the effects of treatment or for patient evaluations.
8. Trains patients in the use of orthopaedic braces, prostheses, and
supportive/assistive devices (canes, crutches, walkers).
9. Assists in transporting patients to and from treatment areas, lifting
and transferring them according to positioning requirements.
10. Prepares treatment areas and electrotherapy equipment for use by
physiotherapists and check and store equipment after treatment.
11. Participates in the department’s Quality Improvement Program.
12. Participates in committee work related to the rehabilitation team
and/or organization.
13. Maintains necessary workload measurement.
14. Perform clerical duties such as taking inventory, ordering supplies,
answering the telephone, taking messages, scheduling outpatients, and managing
the patient wait list.
15. Carries out all work assignments safely and be knowledgeable of and
in compliance with relevant regulations, policies and procedures. (ie.
Occupational Health and Safety Act).
16. Demonstrates commitment to continuing education.
17. Any other such duties as may be delegated from time to time by the
physiotherapists and Director, Outpatient Services.
RESPONSIBLE TO:
This Casual
position is responsible to the Director, Therapeutic Services
Salary as per
Union Schedule
CURRENT ASSIGNMENT:
This
position will be required to work days.
