Director of Therapeutic Services

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduate of a Registered Practical Nursing Program and current Certificate of competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN) Clinical Telemedicine Certification; preferred
  • Current CPR
  • Minimum 3 years Registered Practical Nursing Experience, telemedicine experience considered an asset
  • Experience in education, training and supervision
  • Experience working with physicians and other healthcare professionals
  • Exhibits the ability and competence to work with all computer systems, applications and new technology
  • Demonstrated assessment skills
  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills including distinguished verbal communication abilities
  • Ability to effectively communicate with various levels of external stakeholders and OTN staff
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team
  • Flexibility to respond to a fluctuating workload and a changing environment
  • Promotes opportunities for the use of telemedicine
  • Dependable, competent and continued ability to carry out responsibilities
  • Familiar with Occupational Health & Safety Workers’ rights and responsibilities
  • Physically capable of performing the essential duties of the job.

BASIC REPONSIBILITIES:

  1.  Assist the telemedicine coordinator with the development, delivery and monitoring of high-quality organizational telemedicine initiatives for the corporation.
  2. Promote the use of telemedicine to healthcare professionals, patients and the community on behalf of the corporation.
  3. Monitor the day-to-day function of patient appointments in the Telemedicine Units.
  4. Assist the telemedicine coordinator with ongoing clinical videoconferencing activities and associated administrative processes including scheduling and supervision of telemedicine service delivery.
  5. Maintain current knowledge base with respect to the field of telemedicine and telemedicine activities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Patient Care:

  • Maintains CNO Standards of Practice
  • Follows policies and procedures as set out by the corporation
  • Maintains competence in all clinical skills pertaining to his/her areas of work
  • Promotes a multi-disciplinary approach to client and family-centred care
  • Facilitates patient/family education
  • Communicates effectively with all providers of care
  • Utilizes the Nursing Process to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care on an ongoing basis. Co-ordinates planning of individual care plans with all disciplines and care providers
  • Maintains the patients medical record
  • Preserves confidentiality of all clients
  • Acts as a client advocate, respecting the dignity, worth and rights of each individual receiving telemedicine services

Patient Safety:

  • Anticipate changes in the patient’s condition and the likely need for support or medical assistance
  • Adhere to accepted standards of care
  • Adopt an attitude of mindfulness and hazard awareness
  • Adhere to protocols and guidelines related to patient care and assessment
  • Recognize, respond, and report adverse events
  • Communicate effectively for patient safety

Health and Safety:

  • Follows safe work practices
  • Reports any unsafe conditions
  • Promotes and maintains a safe and healthy working environment
  • Evaluates work procedures and environments to identify potential hazards and ensures adequate controls are in place

Human Resources:

  • Participates in the orientation process and may assist with mentorship, additional skills training for co-workers where requested
  • Provides supervision of and/or mentorship of RPN’s facilitating telemedicine as delegated
  • Will cover vacation requests received by telemedicine coordinator, as well as days when additional assistance is required

Community Partners & Resources:

  • Participates in Regional Telemedicine activities as delegated
  • Has knowledge of and collaborates with other community organizations and services to improve client care or provide continuing care
  • Has a good working relationship with Regional Telehealth staff, physicians and Telehealth specialists. Collaborates to provide optimal utilization of services to provide the highest levels of care
  • Cooperates with other agencies in education regarding services and care available in the community

Quality Improvement:

  • Participates in the hospital accreditation process and quality improvement initiatives

Equipment:

  • Provides input into plans for purchase of telemedicine equipment
  • Ensures adequate supplies and equipment are available for daily patient care
  • Ensures he/she is appropriately educated in the use of all equipment prior to using and cares for all equipment
  • Initiates and follows up with maintenance and/or repairs of equipment as necessary
  • Reports any equipment problems/failure to the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN) Help Desk
  • Develop expertise in the use and care of Telemedicine equipment

Other Activities:

  • Participates on teams/committees within the organization as requested/required
  • Support regular nurse participation in OTN training sessions, monthly meetings, and in the development and sharing of telemedicine best practices, support program monitoring and evaluation activities with OTN partners and/or the LHIN
  • Collection and reporting of required monthly telemedicine statistics and workload for the corporation
