Lead aprons no longer used as shields during X-rays and CT scans at Riverside facilities

December 04, 2025

Riverside Health Care’s Diagnostic Imaging (DI) Department is removing patient lead shields during X-ray and CT exams. This aligns with the new standards for DI that many other health-care providers in the region and province have already implemented. Advanced equipment automatically adjusts exposure to obtain the highest-quality images using the lowest amount of radiation necessary.

This decision is recommended based on extensive research and innovations in imaging technology, as well as recommendations by radiation safety organizations.

“Safety is always a top priority, and the decision to make this change was based on research and advanced imaging equipment. Modern imaging technology uses minimal radiation, and we greatly benefit from removing potential obstructions to get the best images possible,” says Tiffany Dolyny, MRT, Quality Lead in Diagnostic Imaging at Riverside Health Care.

“Removing routine lead aprons allows our technologists to capture clearer images the first time, reducing repeat exams and supporting faster, more accurate diagnoses for our patients."

This change supports both safety and care quality and is based on research showing that lead aprons do not reduce radiation exposure for patients. Modern X-ray and CT equipment use much less radiation — approximately 95 percent less — than 70 years ago. Precision has also evolved, with radiation directed only where it is needed.

The new procedure aligns with best practice recommendations from the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) and the Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR), ensuring Riverside continues to follow national standards in patient safety and diagnostic excellence.

Patients and families with questions or concerns about this change are encouraged to speak with their Diagnostic Imaging technologist. Requests for shielding after discussion with the technologist will be respected, so long as it does not compromise the integrity of the exam.

At Riverside Health Care, we remain dedicated to providing safe, evidence-based and patient-centred services across the Rainy River District. This change reflects our ongoing commitment to excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement in the care we deliver by enhancing safety, supporting better health outcomes, and ensuring every person we serve receives the highest standard of caretoday and into the future.
